He dug into the rice with a finger until he’d excavated the top of his drowned phone.
“Leave it until morning,” she said. “It’ll be good as new.”
Good as new. He smoothed the rice so the phone was concealed again in the tiny sea of moisture-wicking grains. It was just a thing people said. Nothing was ever good as new. Not a cell phone. Certainly not a person.
